After many years of delays and funding challenges New York City finally seems set on opening a number of massive transit hubs over he next few years. One of these is the Fulton Center which features this stunning steel screen dubbed "The Oculus" and has only been open since November.
I visited Fulton Center on an overcast day which provided the perfect lighting for my shots. As soon as I walked in and looked up for the first time I knew what I wanted my image to look like. To me the entire piece looks like something out of a 1960's era James Bond movie and I wanted to capture that dynamic in my own imagery. By capturing the graduated tones as the screen descends from the skylight our eye is forced to focus on the lines and geometry of the structure. When you are in this space you cannot help but to look up at the skylight. It completely dominates the atrium. By taking advantage of the converging lines and bright light I'm hoping to simulate feeling of looking up at this impressive giant eye.
